My current work can be described as a series of mixed media drawings that focus on movement, space, and perspective. For two decades my work has emphasized collage and assemblage techniques, and humanistic, poetic themes. I have always loved drawing and see it as capturing the essence of things, central to the creative act, and I am inspired by the expressive marks in ancient cave art, the movement in old master drawings, and the volume conveyed in architectural studies. I work with bold lines and gestures in my own work. Drawing can be preparatory to something else, but it allows for so much imagination that I prefer it in the foreground. My backgrounds are layers of collage, antique book pages, sheet music, stencils, and paint. This textural surface emphasizes physicality, while the background content informs the drawn subject. I draw with watercolor pencils, graphite, inks, and pastels, blending my lines as I paint into and around them, blurring the boundaries between drawing and surface, adding volume, and creating a sense of motion. I am drawn to narrative subjects, and ones that highlight what is overlooked, playing with memory, movement, and energy. I aim to engage the viewer in a way that invites reflections on time passing, and the vibrancy of life.
